Lake Superior State University is out with their annual list of over-used words. This 34th list contains --as usual-- the words which they feel should be banned because of misuse, over-use or "general uselessness." Among them:
--
'Green' and all of its incarnations, such as 'going green,' 'building green,' 'greening,' 'green technology,' 'green solutions' and more.
--
'carbon footprint' or 'carbon offsetting.'
--
'maverick' (Thanks to John McCain and Company for that one)
--
'first dude' (Which would have been Bill Clinton if Hillary had run and won)
--
'bailout.'
--The 'Wall street /Main Street' combination.
--The addition of the word "
monkey" to another name, especially on the Internet.
--Another internet fave,
the '<3' symbol used to make a sideways heart and mean "love."

--
'icon' or 'iconic'.
--
'game changer'
--'staycation'.
--the phrase
'desperate search'.
--the phrase
'not so much'.
--'the phrase
'winner of five nominations'. If you're just nominated, you're not a winner yet.
